What’s Up with Moon Days?
Moon days are simply opportunities for rest. Over time, yoga practice grows your awareness. You become more aware and attuned to your body, its rhythms, and eventually to nature. The more you connect to the rhythms both in and around you, the more balanced you will feel.
Nature is cyclical.
Each month there’s a new and full moon. Ever hear of the tides moving according to the phases of the moon? It can have an effect you as well. Begin to pay attention on moon days; see what you notice.
Full Moon
The full moon is a time of much energy and activity. To put it simply, everything is amplified or at its fullest. It’s easy to overdo at this time. Along with excess energy, you may find anxiety and tension running high—in yourself and others. Injury is more likely to occur. So, if you practice yoga on the full moon be careful not to do too much. Gentle movement, practicing gratitude, chanting or praying can all help you feel more steady and inspire positivity.
New Moon
On the new moon, your energy is at its lowest. You may find it difficult to motivate yourself. At this time, you can often feel depleted and sometimes emotional. This is a time for rest. It’s even more important to take off from yoga practice on the new moon as we should not do anything too vigorous. Calming practices and rest are balancing. Journaling, meditating, and yoga nidra (guided restorative meditation) are all supported by the new moon’s calming energy. It’s also a time for new beginnings, so reflect and set intentions for the month ahead.
For the Ladies
As I began practicing six days a week (with rest on moon days) my periods became more regular and easier overall. Menstruation is a healthy thing! It’s encouraged to rest the first three days. This is a time of detoxification and a downward flow of energy is needed (apana). When practicing yoga, the opposite flow happens, an upward flow of energy (prana), So, give yourself the gift of rest during this time. You’ll be healthier in body and mind for it. And, enjoy some chocolate too!
Moon Day Wrap Up
It’s really up to you whether or not to practice on moon days. Here’s a list of upcoming moon days for your reference. I encourage you to rest, especially on the new moon. Personally, I take off completely and look forward to these rest days to replenish. I’ve found that when we live close to nature and its cycles, we live in greater harmony. And that friends, is the point. :)
